Seneca Village was a primarily African-American community that once existed on lands now accomplished by what is now Central Park. The late 1830s, early 1840s was probably Seneca Village's heyday. A large portion of the community at various points would have been composed of fugitives who were seeking freedom from slavery in the south during that period.
