Northcliffe came from a relatively modest background, didn't he? What can you tell us about his upbringing? Well, i think less than modest. His father was an alcoholic school teacher in dublin,. He met his mother, who was anglo irish and very much the matriarch of the family. And so it was a real hard scrabble of existence in his early years. But despite this, even, as I say, he was only about 30 when when he founded the daily mail.
