Your audience needs twice as long to receive your point as you need to say it. When you pause, you allow that time for your audience to process and make relevant. It also gives you time to prepare and to be precise. Often when we talk, our mouths are running ahead of our minds. Our minds train to catch up. And them being slower and introducing pauses deliberately, like i'm trying to do right now, empowers them to be precise because it gives their minds time to produce the words and the ideas that they are driving toward.
