The Communist Party in the Twenties and Thirties
When the party founded was established, it took a very traditional stance that the revolution was going to be based on the working class. The defeat of the urban movement in 19 27 really meant that they had no choice but to settle in the countryside. And so you see, increasingly, although the rhetoric keeps talking about the proletariat, the proletarian revolution, it becomes an armed force which is based in the countryside and increasingly reliant on peasant support to keep it alive and to keep it going.
