The Comanches and the Fort of Benjamin

The Comanches had ruled the southern Great Plains for 150 years. Their territory covered 250,000 square miles through present day Texas, New Mexico, Colorado, Kansas and Oklahoma. They controlled the buffalo and horses, which had been introduced through Mexico by the Spanish in the 1600s. By the 1830s, they had conquered 22 different tribes.
