As of 2013, the median household approaching retirement only had $111,000 in 401k and IRA holdings. If you do what financial advisors suggest, that creates less than $5,000 in annual income. "For people going into retirement with usually something like 20 years to go, 110, 120, even 130,000 is no help at all," he says.
