The Tea Party Movement Tightened the Vise in 2010
In the 90s things were set up for this change, and then the Tea Party movement came along. It really flattens politics into this crystallized us versus them, so there's just no more compromise. Both Boehner and McConnell are pretty clear in that election that they want to make Obama a one-term presidency. The labels change but the basic disposition towards politics as battle royal confrontation remains.
