The Civil Rights Movement and Libel Lawsuits
In 19 64, state officials in the south used libel lawsuits against the national media to chill coverage of segregation. The civil rights movement had a lot of support from powerful national mediat organizations who gave them lots of coverage and attention. And there was not much the southern statesan communities could do to fight that. But wat they could do was file libel lawsuits, and then they ere on their own turf.
