The Mining Industry in the Nineties
Miners were on the offensive, and they won. They didn't want a repeat of what had happened to ted heath's government in the seventies. This dispute didn't start about pay. It was about job security. Arthur scargill, the national e of mine workers, said, look, we have this list of pitts that are going to be closed by the governmenta. And so what they went on strike about essentially was about pit closurs. Because they were less well prepared than the government was, they lost that strike, but it took 12 months.
