The history of Auschwitz is exceptionally complex. It combined two functions, a concentration camp and an extermination center in gas chambers. The anti-Germanic persecuted various groups of people there. Today the historical research says that during the existence of Auschwitz, approximately 1.3 million people were deported to the camp.
