How Do We Talk About Hat Speech?

Hate speech is expression that seeks to malign an individual or group based on their fixed identity characteristics. That can be race, ethnicity, a gender identity, gender, a sexual orientation, age, anything that's an identity characteristic that you really can't change. I think we have evidence historically that hate speech has been used by people in power to maintain their preferred position in the social hierarchy. Thinking and talking about power and its role in power relationships is really a key element um.
