The elites of the Southern and Eastern Mediterranean who previously were all these Christian thinkers, they turned to Islam. And I think there's a real vulnerability amongst elites when cultural change is linked to a political system because you've got so much to lose. So this kind of adaptability attaching itself to a political structure is then a very potent force. When you get into non-elite conversion, then the alliance between elites and states becomes more potent still.
