I was a sports rider and that was my background. I got hired in santa cruz by the guy who said, well, i have an opening on the police i'll give you a shot at it,. Pays a hundred and 50 dollars a week. And i went to work on the police beat. And i'd never covered a quart. I'd never covered news at all. And i had to up pretty damnd quickly. And one thing i've found out about journalism is some people are born to it and some people aren't. And i think i was just born to it.
