Barry Goldwater set up this identity for conservatives as people who would hold to a point of principle even at the expense of achieving political power. The idea that conservatism was, you know, a post World War II phenomenon gained steam in the 50s through national review in the 60s doesn't really make as much sense when you realize how similar it is to what we saw in 1920s and 30s. And now here we sit back because we've got a White House, a thought-and-thought leader like Donald Trump with all these platitudes about 'time to rip off the mouth of pretense'
