The location where Michelle's body was found is both a lover's lane for teenagers as well as a fishing spot. If you believe the defense, it makes perfect sense that Leo Sr. would look there. When Jack Edmond asked one of the crime scene technicians why no one bothered to analyze the tire tracks or footprints, he was told there were just too many. The suspicion around Leo Sr.'s vision, or premonition, was its own gift from God to the prosecutor.
