The Problem With Uncoordinated Charging of EVs
Uncoordinated charging of EVs in a neighborhood using L2 charges will reduce the lifespan of a 30 year transformer to three years. Most utilities have very little insight into what actually is happening on your grid, you know, voltage setting from second to second or minute to minute. The trouble with charging at night is that transformers are designed to cool at night. So if you shift the load to the evening time, now your lifetime of your transformer drops even faster.
