Women's Rights in Jane Austen's Writings
Women's rights are very interesting during this period I think and it's one of the things that when I've been doing research, my research background is mainly in women's education and the country house. Within Austen's lifetime we had the publication of Mary Wollstonecraft's Evindication of the Rights of Women which was 1787. It all comes out of the intellectual period we call the Enlightenment which roughly spans the 18th century. So I think it's really interesting in terms of looking at Jane Austen's life mapped onto this period of history - a really interesting 41 years in the development of these things.
