The Problem With Bachelor's
In 1821, Missouri was amongst the first in the United States to introduce a bachelor tax charging single adult men a dollar for their freedom. A century later, the Republican governor of Montana signed a law authorizing a $3 tax on all bachelor's in the state between the ages of 21 and 50. It was eventually struck down by the state's Supreme Court a year later. The original bill proposed by T.H. McDonald of Flathead, Montana had made provision for a $5 bachelor's tax, a party to create a state fund for widows. For months, Montana newspapers carried lists of those bachelor's who got their $3 back.
