The Importance of Imitating

Actors should imitate only those characters which are suitable to their profession. They must not represent slaves, male or female, performing the offices of slaves. Neither may they copy the behavior of madmen. A good man will be most ready to play the part of a good man when he is acting firmly and wisely. He will disdain such a person who is unworthy of him in some way. His style will be both imitative and narrative; but there will be very little of the former and a great deal of the latter.
