The Heroic Quality of Philip K. Dick's Exegesis
Philip K. Dick is fighting to retain some essence of humanity in a world that seems bent on annulling that essence. The figure of the android becomes a really powerful and poignant image of somebody who has been thrown into a world and they don't understand what their nature there being is. And even if you assume an idealistic idea of mind and you say well all you are really is a disembedded fragment of God's mind, that is sort of like saying you are just an android right? Well at that point we have to ask ourselves what it means to be human and in what sense do we transcend the purely mechanistic causes of our manifestation in this world.
