The Encyclopaedia Problem
i started off thinking i was going to work on encyclopaedias at in the process of working on i decided that that term was just too fraught and broad. And so i ditched it. Basically, i have it coiled down to a tiny section, chapter three, which is entitled the encyclopaedia problem. But mostly i talk about reference works, by which, it's a terribly unequinistic term coined in the early nineteenth century. A big book meant to be consulted rather than read through,. It comes with aids to consultation, finding device specifically. Thes jans are still with us to day. They are really fascinating sources for how people in this period
