Do You Think There's a Misreading of the Historic Built Environment?
The stories often relate to monasteries getting up to some kind of naughtiness, but it's underground so no one can see it. I'm a buildings archaeologist and have been for over 20 years. I understand what features which might look mysterious in some historic buildings are actually for. And the truth is usually desperately prosaic. So yes, we do have underground passages, but they're rarely there as inverted commas, escape tunnels or secret passages. They're there for perfectly normal, everyday practical purpose.
