The idea behind photo censis, or for solar fuels. Light shines, electrons are promoted, they relax to the edge of the conduction band and then if we've made an electrical contact to that material, there's a way out am. And some of the electrons will make their way out anthenly, think about them travelling through a wire, let's say, to an external circuit. The trick with designing a solar cell is to make that process very efficient.
