Most major American news organizations are still able to keep one or a couple of correspondence on the ground in Beijing. The Chinese government, even as it seeks to reshape the international order, craves legitimacy that comes from being able to say "We have a New York Times correspondent in our Capitol" It's not completely shut down, but the numbers are dramatically down, and the conditions on the ground are much tougher.
