The Invasion of Normandy
Sources don't seem to imply that it's considered to be a really exceptional thing to ask for. We're talking six months to assemble an invasion fleet. That is quite a short amount of time if you're building an entire fleet, which I think most historians have quite happy to accept. So there's several places where Normandy had pre-existing ships. And we can make more informed guesses about what the requirements might have been in 1066.
