Alexander Raskolnikov was summoned to appear at a government office. The head clerk demanded the recovery of money due from him. He tried to catch at something and fix his mind on it, but could not succeed in this. Yet he kept hoping to see through him and guess something from his face. An officer walked in very jauntily with a peculiar swing of his shoulders. His bearing was by no means in keeping with his clothes. But then it's certainly not that - thought raskolnik Russian. And he trembled with joy. A load was lifted from his back.
