In the 60s and 70s, there were only a few major media outlets that Americans got national news from. The president could get airtime when he wanted on all of these networks. And so it was this period of almost uniquely this national communication by presidents. That started to change with talk radios in the 1980s and 90s; then growth of other networks in the 90s and 2000s as well.
