Is the EU a Super State?
Most of the European institutions, as Dom Nix said, are actually extensions of these national governments. So politicians have ever weaker ties with civil society and parties are deeply disconnected from their respective populations. This means there is a kind of multiplier effect once they move to the European level where they govern without any clear mandate. It creates an issue where you don't know where the entry point in these institutions really is.
