Hitler believed that war was inevitable, but in the long term you're almost certain lose it. But if you strike now, you might just win it. It's a sort of circular argument that's led to so many of the great strategic errors of the twentieth century. The scenario i am describing is one pretty much entirely of his own making. He has encircled himself. So indeed, he has created the situation that he finds himself in on the eleventh and the twelfth of december. We need to understand them as historians.
