Rationing went on until 19 54. The ministry of food andvarious magazines exhorted people to make the most of the ration. There was this sense that christmas was a thing, and it wasn't considered in bad taste. And there was a sense that that you got ady something to get through this horendous era. I think one of the things that comes through very strongly in diaries of the era and letters is this sheer stress people were living under. Lot of people setting on the home front were not directly affected. If you kept your job, you were fine. But for a lot of people, it really was just a question of getting on with it
