Wei and Madam Ku were clearly in a good position when the Tai-Chang emperor died. Wei himself was transferred from a relatively minor palace post into the powerful directorate of ceremonial. He would conduct a reign of terror across the mid-1620s, directed at what is known as the Donglin faction.
