The Great Specter Haunting Europe

The French Revolution loomed over the middle of the 19th century and cast an inescapable shadow across Europe. In 1848, what one thought about the original French Revolution was going to say a lot about how you responded to news of the fall of the July monarchy. So instead of launching the revolutions of 1848 into Germany and Austria, just to put the narrative on hold for two weeks, I have instead decided to publish a long digression which eventually got so long that I just had to cut the whole thing off. And here we are, home at last.
