The Importance of Knowing the Basics
There are between two and five thousand Chinese characters that you need to be able to read in order to read a newspaper. They're all made up of about 200 basic building blocks, called the radicals. And if you learn those 200 building blocks, then in the way that they combine, you can see meaning. So as an example here, there's a character that means woman that looks quite like a picture of a woman. Then when those two characters, woman and child are put together in the same character, that means good or well. By knowing what the constituent parts mean, the combination character makes perfect sense. The etymology just needs to be funny and memorable.
