We all hope that whatever the future trading arrangement between the united kingdom and the eu. 27 is, it will be able to obviate the need for any boarder. But frankly, that's not self evident. And this is what we're struggling to find a solution to. The commission has proposed that you could make a special case for northern ireland, treated slightly differently from the rest of the united kingdom. This would put such checks as might be needed in the ports and the airports - so at places where there is naturally anyway some degree of control and verification about goods and services. And then you would not need them on the border. I think this is a very pragmatic way
