The Smoking Hills
In the year 18 50, a ship called the h m s investigator was searching for survivors of the franklin party in the area around franklin bay. The crew of this ship came across cliffs by the sea that were strangely covered and giving off plumes of smoke. When they got to the source of the smoke, they found no human life,. Only thick smoke emerging from various vents in the ground, and mell of sulphur so strong that we could not approach the smoke pillar nearer than ten or 15 feet. Flame there was none. But the ground was so hot that it scorched the soles of our feet. Arnold says that mirching compared the landscape to a huge chemical factory.
