Somalia's Famine - Lessons From the 2011 Famine
In Somalia's famine in 1991, 1992 and in 2011, it was the same populations that come from particular ethnic and social groups that were predominantly the ones that died. We have been speaking to donors and international agencies highlighting that these groups are the ones that should be focused on because they have limited access to support. Another lesson would have been to have ramped up the response earlier,. There were early warnings and there were initiatives to highlight the problem from late last year and early this year. The humanitarian response in Somalia has been stuck in its urban areas - we don't see very much change in that situation.
