Bernardine Avaristo says the publishing industry is still run by predominantly white middle class demographics same as years ago. The perceived target reader being a middle-aged middle class and often white woman, who apparently does not have the imagination oftentimes to want to engage with writings by people of color. "I don't run a publishing business that is investing in romance fiction and the like," she said.
