The number of females generally surpasses that of the males. It has never been observed that even among savages the females had like those of other animals stated times of passion and indifference. We might as these contests do not destroy the other species there is at least equal room to think they would not be fatal to ours nay it is very probable that they would cause fewer ravages than they do in society especially in those countries where morality being as yet held in some esteem every day produced duels murders and even worse crimes.
