The british nationality act came into force on the first of january 19 83. Previously, simply being born in the u k was enough to qualify as a british citizen. But from this day onwards, children needed to have a parent who is abritish citizen or at least a permanent resident in the country. This might seem like a minor change, but it has left thousands of youngsters effectively stateless. The home office charges them a fee of one thousand and 12 pounds.
