Stonehenge - A Brief History
The first well dated event we've got at stonehenge is the excavation of a perfectly circular ditch and bank. Immediately inside that ring, in the chalk, there is a ring, a perfect circle of 56 small standing stones from southwest wales. A few centuries later, those blue stones are removed and brought into the centre of the site and re erected in a new arrangement. And this is the murkiest area in stonehenge history. We're possibly talking about as many as 80 or 90 blue stones in these two arrangements. But it's all quite confusing. The evidence is good that was later dismantled.
