The Effects of the Green Revolution on the Environment
After the 1960s seeds were commercialized and some corporations became the arbiters of seed development and sale. Today around 60% of commercial seeds around the world are controlled by just three companies. India used to have 110,000 varieties of rice but now there are only 7,000 left. This reduction in the number of varieties of rice means genetic diversity is being lost.
