The Importance of Treaties in the United States
The shift away from treaties to other forms of international agreements has harmed the United States on the international stage, he says. He argues that because presidents are unable to complete their commitments with legislative support it diminishes their legitimacy domestically. And we've seen that happen a couple with the Trump administration following Obama's presidency. The U.S. is not party to a lot of multilateral agreements. They don't participate in the organizations set up in order to set international law and a whole host of issues.
