The Insurrection and the Restoration of Charles II
In 1660 the monarchy is restored under Charles II. On the face of it, the status quo has prevailed and the nation has kind of reverted to how it had been before the chaos of the Civil War. But I'm guessing it's a little more complex than that. Ronald: It held open the wounds inflicted upon Britain and Ireland by the Civil Wars. They weren't allowed to heal and as a result, the old Britain could never return and the old Ireland. In Ireland, a Protestant ascendancy was established, which lasted until the 20th century and still divides Ireland this very day.
