What Was It Like for British Women in an Imperial Outpost?
The book is based on the letters of a British woman who travelled to Singapore. She was married to an American Consultant, Maria Balestea. It took her four months to get there from Liverpool and she could only write for three or four months at a time. Swatches of fabric were important as they allowed people to communicate with her via letter.
