The Unconventional Marriage of George Elliot
In 1880, Elliot married John Walter Cross. He was 40 years old and she was 60 at the time. It's a difference that might be quite acceptable if it was the man who was 20 years older than the woman. She also wanted to be buried in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey. And so my sense is that this very respectable Anglican marriage, she thought it might help seal the deal for her.
