Alcohol and the Long Sea Voyages
Alcohol consumption in all its forms was considered important for health and vitality. In places where there are exploitative labor systems, whether it's slavery or some other form of coerced labor, often wages were paid in the form of alcohol. Alcohol makes trans oceanic migration, colonizationandin sustaining those early colonies. It legitimizes their servitude. And so that is a deeply pernicious argument. But there is also an important other side to the story, which is that indigenous peoples actively embraced the production and trade of alcohol themselves.
