Tracking the Wrong Scent
In this chapter, they continue their pursuit of the men they have been following. The men have taken a zigzag road to escape observation, often using side streets instead of main roads. Upon reaching Kennington Lane, Toby, the dog, starts exhibiting indecision and confusion. After some time, Toby finally picks up the scent again and leads them to a timber yard where the men were last seen. Toby jumps onto a barrel covered in creosote, and Holmes and his companion realize they have been tracking the wrong scent due to the prevalence of creosote in London. They decide to follow the correct scent and hope it leads them closer to their goal.
