The Importance of Seniority in China

China is very heavily family based and even today if they're going to eat across several families they will eat in a restaurant not in each other's houses so their family life is very much confined to the family. Senior members are superior and senior to the children of course and no child can replace their father or their grandfather in the generational sequence. The notion of seniority comes from the notion of family seniority it's not done by rules and regulations at the family level or even the regional level. i think we have to adjust our understanding of what we're looking at and then try to perhaps have discussions about why our societies look at things differently, says allen lain.
