The Greeks' Views of Luxury

Ancient Greece is kind of an interesting place because the one source of information on Persian luxury we have is actually Greek historians. So ancient Persians wrote a lot down, but they didn't write down these type of histories or stories about battles,. What we were looking at is a lot of administrative information. We don't know what the Persians thought about this conflict on the Western fringes of this vast empire. But for the Athenians, it was a real seminal moment of nation building. And so that attitude toward luxury sort of gets wrapped in what it is to be Greek and living as Greeks.
