How Did the New Monarchs Make Changes?

Each new monarch, of course, wants to put their stamp on things and to change things to their taste. The best example is with the most famous palace, buckingham palace which started out quite modest. And then his son, george the fourth, spent lavishly and made it this jaw droppingly spectacular palace.
